The Spatial Data Management Division has the responsibility for coordinating, implementing and managing national GIS programmes and projects.  A part of its mandate is to establish a national spatial data infrastructure (NSDI) to improve access sharing and use of place-based data.  A fundamental component of the NSDI is a mechanism that provides an electronic facility to search, view, transfer, order, advertise, disseminate and preserve geospatial data from numerous sources (government, the private and non- profit sectors and academia) through the internet. The efficient operation of the recently established geospatial and metadata portals are therefore important to the sustainability of the NSDI.

Providing Access to Data via the Metadata and Geospatial Portal

The division currently provides metadata data and geospatial data discovery, retrieval, update and management services via http://www.licj.org.jm/geonetwork. The portal allows for search, retrieval, updates and management of metadata records.

Data Sets Held in the Metadata and Geospatial Portal

The SDMD currently publishes via the Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ) website, a geo-database of some of Jamaica’s geospatial datasets inclusive of, but not limited to the following:

  Datasets

  • Administrative
  • Topography
  • Land & Environment
  • Socio Economic
  • Utilities
  • Hydrology
  • Geology
  • Critical Facilities

Geospatial Portal

Geospatial Portal – allows access to GIS data and GIS web applications that allow users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations.

This application allows users to access geospatial data (maps, imagery etc.) from  international geo-database repositories.

Already several projects have used the geospatial datasets to facilitate the creation of web applications. There are several applications that are currently running and others being development to deliver information to users.
