Disaster Management Project

Current Status

The Disaster Management GIS application is a joint project between the SDMD, the ODPEM, the University of Technology, the National Works Agency and Spatial Innovision Ltd. This application will utilize GIS to address several disaster management issues. This includes finding the best route to an emergency shelter, evacuation planning, predicting which areas are likely to be flooded during heavy rain, and finding which areas will most likely be damaged in a hurricane. More information will become available as the project develops.   The project was initiated in November of 2007. The project specification is still being finalized. However, Web publishing and geodatabase management software has been installed and configured in the Land Information Council of Jamaica (LICJ) and National Works Agency. The LICJ is currently hosting ODPEM'S Emergency Management datasets. Several connectivity tests are not being carried out between the various agencies involved in the project.
